his is a story of a man and his five sons. The events told here happened some time ago, when America was young and it's gates were wide open to immigrants from most of the civilized world. They came to make their homes and share the wealth in the country of boundless opportunity.

Back in the year 1905, James Ballas and his son John (who was fourteen years old at the time) came to America and settled in Chicago with the hope of finding work. Through an employment agency, they shipped out on a "extra" gang on the railroad. They worked the railroad for a while together, and in a years time the "old man" sent word for another son to come and join them in America.
